Where did “Pencils” begin?! Well, it started back in 2017 when I found myself with a few of the Coastal Caring Clowns at a Seniors Walk along a Caloundra beach. I had recently retired from teaching Music in Primary schools and was looking for uplifting activities to occupy my days. This colourful group struck a happy chord in my heart as their aim to bring light, love and smiles to others soon became my passion also. To achieve this one had to be a little bit silly, sing songs and interact with the young and the not so young. As I had written out my lesson plans in lead pencil for many years it seemed appropriate for me to become “PENCILS” the clown. I have been moved to tears numerous times in Nursing Homes, Hospitals and in Palliative Care wards as people open their hearts up to us. Many have also shared their jokes, juggled scarves, beat me at noughts and crosses and sung their favourite songs with and to me. The many extra activities we do helping people celebrate life here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast is so positive and fun at the same time through just “clowning around”. It definitely brings out the best in me and I often walk away feeling I am the one that was blessed.
